The Mitchell was one of the best allied medium bombers of the Second World War. Ordered into production by the United States Army Air Corps in August 1939 it took just fifty-three weeks after receiving the initial contract before the first prototype took to the air on 19 August 1940. Large scale production began immediately and early models were in service by the time America entered the war in December 1941.
In April 1942 sixteen Mitchells, operating from the American aircraft carrier USS Hornet, made one of the most daring bomber raids in the Second World War. They took off on a near impossible mission to bomb Tokyo in a raid of great psychological, if of little military, value.
The Americans did not use Mitchells operationally from the United Kingdom but based them with the 12th United States Army Air Force in the Mediterranean. However the British, Dutch and Russians received large numbers.
The Mitchell was one of the first aircraft with a nose wheel used by the Royal Air Force. Not only does it improve forward vision while the aircraft is on the ground but it improves ground handling. |

1944. The Third Reich. The United States airforce launches a campaign of precision daylight bombing missions on targets within Germany's mighty industrial complex while the British Royal airforce concentrates on carpet-bombing German civilian targets during the night. On the ground, the allied advance continues eastward towards the heart of the Nazi war machine. Hidden in secret cashes around Berlin, invading allied troops discover vast amounts of war booty, pillaged and looted by the German Military from all over Europe.
A United States airforce B-25 Mitchell bomber survives the anti aircraft fire and swarms of night-fighters in the skies over Germany and is sold to the Canadian military after World War 2. The twin-engine bomber is converted into a cargo plane by the Canadian airforce for the soul purpose of carrying valuable military cargo. Stationed just outside of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the B-25 now proudly shows the air force insignia of Canada on her wings.
On the morning of the fifth of January, 1953, ground crews spot a highly sensitive cargo being secretly loaded by special personnel into the bomb bay of the B-25. They are strongly advised not to talk about what they witnessed. A flight plan is filed outlining the journey to Sea Island Airport, just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The cargo manifest lists the cargo hold as empty, and the flight is logged as a routine training mission. Captain Jack McIntosh is pilot and is a decorated war veteran of many bombing missions in the skies over Nazi Germany.
Information is leaked that the B-25 was carrying eight hundred thousand dollars in cash and gold bullion to pay military personnel stationed on the west coast. Marked with swastikas, also on board were crates that were from Adolf Hitler's personal hoard of the spoils of his war.
Part of Hitler's personal hoard and allegedly aboard the ill fated B-25, was the Spear of Destiny; the Roman spear that pierced the side of Jesus Christ as he hung from the cross as described in John 19 31 37. It is said that who ever holds the Spear of Destiny shall rule the world; good or evil.
In 1938 Adolf Hitler ordered an armoured company of SS troops to seize the Spear of Destiny from a museum in Vienna when he invaded Austria. The spear was then kept in a specially built underground bomb proof bunker until finally, at the end of World War 2, the historical religious relic was found in St. Katherine's Church, Nuremberg, Germany by invading American troops and returned to Vienna, Austria.
Fanatical Nazi Zealots claim that the Spear of Destiny that the United States returned to the Hofburg Museum in Vienna was a fake and that the real Spear of Destiny was flown out of Germany by the United States airforce.
The weather forecast for January 15th, 1953, called for clear skies during the day with squalls and storms in the evening.
At the time of the crash the skies were clear.
The official explanation for the crash states that freezing rain jammed the bomber's wing flaps. According to this government-supplied theory the plane, caught in an ice storm and unable to maintain altitude due to iced up wing flaps, hit the lip of a ridge, ripping open the fuselage and spilling cargo across the top of the ridge as well as into a canyon below. The cash, gold and spoils of war may still be within the debris-field.
If the wing flaps were frozen and the bomber was struggling to maintain altitude it would have been under full throttle and the propellers would have been spinning at maximum R P M at the time of impact. At the time of the crash the bomber's propellers were in a feathered position and were not spinning, as can be clearly seen in this photo taken in 2004. The wreckage did not burn, indicating that the fuel tanks were empty and the engines were not running when the aircraft slammed into the high-altitude ridge over Pitt Lake on its final approach to the Sea Island airport. Was the lack of fuel deliberate sabotage, or human error?
Hours after the crash a classic South-East storm blew into the coastal mountains around Vancouver, dumping snow on the wreckage and creating blizzard conditions at higher altitudes. The initial search was immediately called off as survival in the open after a severe plane crash was impossible.
The following April, an extensive search by military personnel successfully located the wreckage and removed the bodies. The military search and rescue personnel piled other remains, including parachutes, suitcases, jackets, boots, personal possessions, maps and classified documents, and burned them on-site. They also left an aluminium plaque stating that the wreckage was already located and not to report it. When an aircraft is carrying valuable cargo they carry these plaques on board, according to an ex-air force officer.

I could record this Mitchell in the Portugal Airshow 2007 at Evora. I lile it so much that I decided to make this litle homage to the glamorous plane and its airmen.
I intentionally left the original sound, so it's like music at least at my ears, like Harley Davidson engine sounds, but in a World War II aircraft!

http://www.mybushwhacker.com
We can't tell you the location of the airplane crash wreckage of the crashed B-25 Mitchell Bomber due to the pact outlined in part one of this series, but we can show you scenes of the hazardous journey we undertook to reach the airplane crash. We can tell you the route is hard and dangerous, but the prize is great for those who know the secret location, and how to get there. The mountains near Vancouver are deceptively close; but make no mistake, once out there in those remote and inhospitable mountains you are on your own, especially after arriving via a crashing airplane. Suffer an injury, even a minor one, and you may not be coming back alive.
Our incredible journey begins in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the wild and untamed west coast of North America. We board our DeHavilland Beaver single-engine float plane in Vancouver's downtown harbour and take off, heading east towards the infamous Pitt Lake. We undertake this journey to learn new clues and secrets being held by the wreckage of the now famous B-25 Mitchell bomber.
While in flight, off in the distance, we spot the fabled ice caves of Pitt Lake. Created by the massive snowfalls of the winter months, the snow cascades down the funnel-like cliffs, collecting in a narrow gulley were the suns melting rays can barely penetrate. Even the hottest summers are unable to reduce the huge clump of snow to liquid that will run down to the sea.
Suddenly we spot in the distance what could be the mystical tent-shaped rock, under which a prospector placed a sample of gold from Slumach's Lost Gold Mine. We will return one day to this much talked about oddity and explore yet another unsolved mystery of the Pacific Northwest.
Rock cairns build by unknown people for unknown reasons present themselves to us from time to time telling us that we are not the first human beings to come this way. Who built them and why plagues our minds as we struggle to take in the view from the top of the world.
At last we reach the crash site and search for new clues into the mystery of the Nazi gold and cash that is rumoured to have been here at one time so long ago. We sift through the wreckage with fine-toothed combs, looking for the smallest of details that could tell us the story of the whereabouts of the much sought after treasure.
Due to global warming and the resulting climate change, new clues have been revealed to us. The snow pack covering much of the wreckage has melted, revealing the B-25's cargo hold and the secrets that it has held all these years. For the first time in centuries these remote ridges are ice and snow free and are ready to give up what they hold.
Another body, obviously still buried by snow and missed by the original search and rescue party that first discovered the wreckage, is revealed by the retreating snow pack. Still in civilian clothes but wearing a flight helmet, the body may be identified matching dental records to these teeth. It seems that there was a passenger on board that fateful day in 1953 when this Mitchell bomber went down. Perhaps a member of the special personnel assigned to escort the precious cargo to its destination on the west coast of Canada?

This video displays part of a video shot on September 2, 2007 from INSIDE a Mitchell B-25 bomber. The main part was shot from the tail gunner seat. A very shaky ride! The flight was from EHLE to Eindhoven airport. The Mitchell is owned by The Duke of Brabant Air Force. The Duke of Brabant Air Force is based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The foundation operates warbirds at airshows throughout Europe. The flagship of our fleet is a B-25 Mitchell bomber that was built in 1944.The DBAF's 1944 built Mitchell was found in Baton Rouge, LA (USA) in a rather neglected state. The registration N320SQ was arranged to honour the former RAF (Dutch) 320 Squadron, operating Mitchells in the European theatre of war. Since May 1990 the aircraft is operated from Eindhoven, where she was restored to an excellent condition. The active military period of the bomber was from 1944 up to 1958 with USAAF Administrative Units as transport and support aircraft of the Air University Wing. Several civil owners operated the aircraft since 1959. |

2007 New Garden Airshow
New Garden Airport, Toughkenamon, PA
Sunday June 10, 2007
IN THIS VIDEO, watch as I get up close and personal with the B-25 Mitchell "Briefing Time" as it departs New Garden Airport after the airshow and makes a flyby (well, sort of). I happened to be out by Matt Chapman and Michael Mancuso's aircraft at the time and ventured a little closer to the runway to get this amazing perspective. Mind you, I was still about 100 feet away from Runway 24, so I was in no danger.
