Although often overshadowed by the B17 Flying Fortress, the B24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US military aircraft and served with distinction in both war and peace. The first B24 Liberator made its maiden flight on 29 December 1939.
Designed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation to rival the Boeing B17, the type proved an outstanding success, with 18500 aircraft being built by Consolidated, Douglas, North American and Ford between 1940 and 1945.
1900 B24s were supplied to the Royal Air Force. Liberators were used by RAF bomber squadrons in the Middle East, and from January 1944 became the principle RAF strategic bomber in the Far East. Liberators were also deployed by RAF Coastal Command, playing a key role in the war against Germany's submarine fleet. Liberators also saw service as transports; indeed, (AL504 Commando) became the personal aircraft of Prime Minister Winston Churchill for a short time.
Liberators continued in use until December 1968 when the Indian Air Force retired its former RAF machines.
Six from the first batch for the UK were directed to British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) for use in the North Atlantic Return Ferry Service. During WWII, Captain D.C.T. Bennett known as Pathfinder Bennett, flew the first crossing on 14 May 1941 taking 14½ hours. The thousandth crossing of the Atlantic took place in September 1944. |

Clips of B-24 bomber assault on the Ploesti oil refinery in Nazi-occupied Romania during WW2. Scenes taken from the 1970s-era TV series "WWII:GI Diary".... The first part of the video is of "Operation Tidal Wave" when long-range B-24 Liberator bombers took off from desert bases in North Africa to hit the refineries--a very costly raid in both aircraft and lives. The later assaults shown were flown by both B-17 and B-24 bombers out of bases in Italy. Quite a bit of video footage from captured German gun cameras showing deadly attacks on American bombers. NOTE: Clips are not ALL from the Ploesti raid--some are clearly from other time periods in WW2 (typical of older documentaries which assembled footage from various sources). Also, this was cut down to fit into the Youtube 10-minute video limit. |

For my 50th birthday, I took a ride in the Collings Foundation B-24 Liberator, which is similar to the one flown by my Uncle Walt during the war.
The Albuquerque setting was appropriate, because Uncle Walt did much of his B-24 training here at Kirtland AFB. |

Most people immediately think B-17 when they hear someone mention a WWII heavy bomber. But actually it was the B-24 that to me was the real workhorse! It was produced in greater numbers than any other American combat aircraft of World War II and still holds the record as the most produced U.S. military aircraft. And it wasn't only used by the Americans but by many other allied air forces! It was faster than the B-17. Had a longer range while it would still carry a similar payload to that of the B-17. However it was a vulnerable plane and easily caught fire!
I'm reliving a neat bit of history thanks to AlphaSim. I hope you'll enjoy this video of their Liberator. They covered the D G and J models.
And please, this is youtube. Unfortunately the video size and compression methods aren't good enough to fully capture the beauty of this plane. If you want to see the HQ video then please visit my site. |

B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of the 9th and 493rd Bomb Squadrons, 7th Bomb Group, 10th Air Force, prepare for takeoff from Pandaveswar Army Air Base, India, early on the morning of January 23, 1945. Shown taking off are the lead planes of each squadron, No. 27 and No. 50; No. 23 follows 27. Good views of each squadron's tail pattern. Objective was the great steel bridge at Kanchanaburi, Thailand, part of the infamous, prisoner-built Burma-Siam Railway. (The bridge's neighboring wooden bypass structure is sometimes mistakenly identified with the fictional "Bridge over the River Kwai.") Bad weather forced all bombers to turn back except No. 24, though its bombs missed the target! Photography by 10th AAF Combat Camera Unit. Source: Record Group 18, CS 3117, National Archives II. The most costly attack of US Airforce in WWII.
Although we considered the americans from the very beginning of their history our friends, we had to fight against them in WWII (jun1941-aug1944 - german alliance) when they wanted to bomb our rafineries.
Of the 177 bombers (B 24 Liberator) that took part in the mission 54 were lost, a further 53 planes were heavily damaged.
The aircraft took off individually between 10:30 and 11:00 pm on June 11th, arriving over the target at dawn the following day. Ten bombers hit the Astra refinery at Ploesti, one B-24 attacked the port area of Constanta, the remaining two B-24s struck unidentified targets. Three ended up interned in Turkey, the rest manage to reach friendly bases in Iraq. Damage turned out to be minimal but the mission was considered a success.
Because of the bravery of the Romanian Airforce., no air attack was made for 1 year. IAR-80 was the main romanian fighter aircraft that distroyed two thirds of B24.
(European Theatre)
All the POW s were exceptionally treated and in aug 44 they returned home.
Right now we are the closest friend of the USA in EU. Our army is fighting shoulder to shoulder with US Army in Afghanistan and Iraq. |
