This is a video my friend and I made of the beautiful Avro Vulcan in the skies once again. The last airworthy vulcan (XH558) in 2007 hopefully will return to the skies again but this is a little video to welcome it back to the skies when it does so. I would like to hear your comments. |

Vulcan bomber xh558 take off covered by SKY NEWS.
Message from Robert Pleming, Chief Executive VTST, 18th April 2008
The middle of April saw the safe completion of two further test flights, and the Compass Swing at RAF Cottesmore. Some snags were encountered, but that is the point of test flying -- to discover problems!
Some of these snags were put right in between the two test flights, but the curtailment of the second flight because the starboard landing gear bay door would not close means that there will be at least one more test flight.
We expect that this further flight will happen before the end of April, and therefore don't expect there to be any major impact on our plans to appear at airshows early in the summer.
The media coverage of the test flights, especially on the BBC, has been huge, and significant confirmation of the continuing interest by the public at large in the Vulcan.
Following the completion of the test flights, there will be an interlude of about a month, during which Marshall Aerospace and the CAA will be completing the final reviews and paperwork leading to the grant of the Permit to Fly.
We will then be able to fly again, this time to practice how we will bring XH558 to airshows. The final step is to fly our airshow sequence in front of a CAA Display Examiner, who, if satisfied with its safety, will issue a Display Authorisation.
We remain reliant on our supporters for the fund-raising momentum that will take us to the airshow season. We must keep it up -- and I am pleased to let you that because of the test flights, so far the momentum has not dropped. We need to find at least £50,000 cash every month until we have returned to the airshow circuit . |

This RC plane was made from my own design using EPP foam, carbon fiber and balsa. It took about 5 full days of work. The whole video the plane flies half throttle due to the prop hitting the vertical fin at higher RPMs. Still she's quite fast. Commentary by my wife. :-)

Prior to her first flight in nearly 15 years, XH558 and her crew needed to carry out 2 fast taxy runs. This footage was filmed by the wife of co-pilot Squadron Leader David Thomas. In command was Squadron Leader Al McDicken, with AEO Squadron Leader Barry Masefield.
This was the first time that XH558 had raised her nose in a very long time! The second of the 2 runs was chiefly to test the operation of the Tail Brake Parachute.

Test Flight 3, from RAF Cottesmore back to Bruntingthorpe, filmed by the wife of pilot Squadron Leader David Thomas. Co-pilot was Squadron Leader Martin Withers, and AEO Squadron Leader Barry Masefield. Marshalls Aerospace Test Pilot Iain Young was an additional forth crew member.
The unmistakable RR Olympus 'howl' - fantastic! Due to a technical snag with the starboard undercarriage door, XH558 flew several times, at low level, over the airfield for the benefit of observation from the ground. Unfortunately, as a result, XH558 had to return directly to Bruntingthorpe, unable to carrying out her full test schedule.

Test Flight 1 (aka 'First Flight') at Bruntingthorpe, filmed by the wife of co-pilot Squadron Leader David Thomas. In command was Squadron Leader Al McDicken, with AEO Squadron Leader Barry Masefield in the rear.
This 30 minute flight was little more than a 'shake-down', being the first time in nearly 15 years that XH558 left the ground! Al McDicken's 'featherbed' landing was the first time he'd landed a Vulcan in 25 years!

The Avro Vulcan is a delta wing subsonic bomber that was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1953 until 1984. The Vulcan was part of the RAF's V bomber force, which fulfilled the role of nuclear deterrence against the
Soviet Union during the Cold War. It was also used in a conventional bombing role during the Falklands conflict with Argentina. One example, XH558 was recently restored for use in display flights and commemoration of the jets' role in the Falklands Conflict.

Vulcan bomber take-off (no talk-over). Apologies for the sound & vision quality of this vid, shot at Exeter airshow (1980s?): And the battery life for that video camera was 20 mins for the whole airshow! But, what raw sound there is, enjoy. Turn the volume up loud!
The sound momentarily quietens down, at the point of take-off. Is that, I wonder, because the soundwaves were - momentarily - being deflected upwards and thus away from my camcorder? |
