Liga clasificó goleando 6-1 a Arsenal (Marzo 26, 2008). El campeón ecuatoriano Liga de Quito no tuvo compasión y goleó 6-1 a Arsenal de Sarandí y clasificó por el Grupo 8 a los octavos de final de la Copa Santander Libertadores de América.
El cuadro albo sumó tres puntos en el estadio Casa Blanca y acumuló 10 unidades clasificándose a la siguiente fase del torneo internacional. Las figuras excluyente del cuadro merengue fueron los volantes Damián Manso, Luis Bolaños y el delantero Joffre Guerrón.
El monarca de la Copa Sudamericana abrió el marcador a través de un derechazo del delantero Félix Leguizamón dejando atónitos a los hinchas albos. Sin embargo, poco les duró la alegría a los jugadores gauchos.
Liga de Quito apretó el acelerador y el gol del empate no demoró en caer. El capitán Patricio Urrutia bajó un balón tras un tiro de esquina y esférico impactó en las rodillas del volante Cristian Díaz derrotando a su propio arquero Mario Cuenca decretando el 1-1, a los 15 minutos.
Los albos no dejaron pensar a su rival y el 2-1 cayó apenas 4 minutos después. Un soberbio tiro libre el argentino Damián "Piojo" Manso terminó en el fondo de las piolas y puso a ganar al campeón ecuatoriano, a los 19 minutos.
Cuando el Arsenal parecía retomar su juego ofensivo, nuevamente se enchufó el "Piojo" Manso y el gaucho le puso un pase de ensueño al volante Luis Bolaños quien con velocidad llegó hasta el fondo del área rival y con calidad marcó el 3-1, a los 28 minutos.
Arsenal nunca encontró su juego, ni la manera de penetrar en el defensa blanca, menos aún cuando Liga ratificaba que era una máquina de ataques por todos los francos.
El 4-1 cayó luego de que Joffre Guerrón desborde por derecha y con categoría puso un centro a ras de césped en el área rival para el ingreso fulgurante de Luis Bolaños para marcar su segundo tanto de la tarde casi al final del primer tiempo, a los 43 minutos.
Segunda parte
Para la etapa de complemento, Liga de Quito no hizo variantes y el estratega Edgardo Bauza apostó al mismo plantel contundente y goleador.
Arsenal se preocupó de no recibir más goles y su técnico Gustavo Alfaro se dedicó a retrasar las líneas para evitar brechas en el mediocampo y neutralizar los embates albos.
Liga de adueño del esférico y empezó a tocar y tocar para buscar un hueco en la zaga merengue. Una de las figuras de Liga de Quito fue el volante Luis Bolaños que se despachó con dos goles debido a la inspiración de ser observado por emisarios del club Porto de Portugal.
Producto del buen accionar del campeón ecuatoriano, no hay quinto malo. El otro tanto albo nació luego de un nuevo desborde por derecha de Joffre Guerrón para un preciso centro para el ariete argentino Claudio "Tanque" Bieler, quien de palomita cabeceó el esférico y puso el 5-1, a los 64 minutos.
A los 75 minutos, producto de la calentura del partido, el volante Carlos Casteglione salió expulsado por doble tarjeta amarilla luego de una fuerte entrada sobre el paraguayo Enrique Vera.
El cotejo se le puso más cuesta arriba al cuadro argentino y Liga de Quito no desaprovechó la oportunidad. El recién ingresado Alfonso Obregón puso el broche de oro y el 6-1 lapidario al final del cotejo a los 90 minutos.

A festa tricolor não ficou restrita à arquibancada, com a volta do pó-de-arroz e o reencontro da torcida com o time em uma Taça Libertadores após 23 anos. Dentro de campo, o Fluminense teve excelente atuação - sua melhor no ano - e goleou o Arsenal por 6 a 0 nesta quarta-feira, no Maracanã, num festival de gols bonitos. Thiago Neves, Dodô (autor de dois gols e melhor em campo), Gabriel, Washington e Cícero fizeram o Tricolor alcançar a liderança do Grupo 8, com quatro pontos.
O Fluminense não perdeu tempo estudando o adversário e começou a partida em ritmo alucinante. Os seguidos ataques se originavam tanto dos laterais, que tiveram ótima atuação, quanto em jogadas pelo meio, em tabelinhas envolvendo o quarteto ofensivo. E Conca, Thiago Neves, Washington e Dodô ainda ajudaram na marcação, pressionando a saída de bola. O time argentino, amedrontado na defesa, errava passes e o posicionamento em campo.

O primeiro gol não demorou a sair. Aos 14 minutos, Thiago Neves cobrou com perfeição uma falta frontal sofrida por Dodô. O atacante começava ali a brilhar. Apesar de ter sido o meia o primeiro a balançar a rede, Dodô participaria de todos os demais gols. E o Tricolor não diminuiu o ímpeto e continuou atacando com sete jogadores, deixando atrás apenas a dupla de zaga e Ygor, além de Fernando Henrique.
O time se mostrou tão confiante no primeiro tempo que até o goleiro resolveu se arriscar, levantando a bola antes de chutá-la, diante de um argentino, após um recuo. O segundo gol foi marcado aos 24, em mais um das pinturas de Dodô, estreante em Libertadores. Ele pegou de primeira, com estilo, um cruzamento perfeito de Júnior César.
Os gols só não continuaram saindo de dez em dez minutos porque, aos 34, a bola chutada por Thiago Silva de fora da área passou rente à trave de Cuenca. Mas aos 44 a torcida pôde comemorar. Após passes de Conca e Júnior César, Dodô saiu driblando a defesa adversária e rolou a bola para Gabriel encobrir, com um leve toque, o goleiro do Arsenal.

O segundo tempo começou com o que parecia impossível: um gol ainda mais bonito do que os três anteriores. Dodô recebeu cruzamento e, de fora da área, pegou de primeira, aos cinco minutos: 4 a 0.
A correria tricolor começou a ser sentida sobretudo por Conca e Thiago Neves, fazendo Renato Gaúcho substituir o segundo e escalando Cícero. O Arsenal até tentou se arriscar no ataque, mas sem levar perigo. Na defesa, continuou dando espaços. E, para o show que dava o Flu, isso era fatal. Aos 26, a dupla de ataque voltou a mostrar entrosamento: Dodô deu passe para Washington, que chutou na saída de Cuenca, fazendo 5 a 0.
Renato Gaúcho resolveu poupar seus jogadores e tirou Arouca e Junior Cesar. Cícero, um dos que entraram, marcou o sexto aos 40, em chute de fora da área após cobrança de falta sofrida, é claro, por Dodô. A goleada poderia ter sido maior, se o árbitro tivesse marcado pênalti em Washington.
A torcida, que não parou um minuto sequer, apresentou o "créu" aos argentinos, cantou o hino do clube e fez a arquibancada tremer. Na véspera da partida, Gustavo Alfaro dissera que, se o Arsenal ficasse na defesa, seria derrotado. Ele nunca teve tanta razão.
