The Antonov An-72 (NATO reporting name Coaler) was Designed as a STOL transport and intended as a replacement for the Antonov An-26, but variants have found success as commercial freighters. The An-72 first flew on 22 December 1977. Produced in tandem with the An-72, the Antonov An-74 variant adds the ability to operate in harsh weather conditions in polar regions. Other An-72 versions include the An-72S VIP transport and An-72P maritime patrol aircraft. |

If Akhtubinsk had to be compared to American test centres, one could say that it is the equivalent of Edwards, Nellis and Eglin - all rolled into one! Tests and evaluations concern new aircraft, remote-controlled reconnaissance vehicles, and armaments as well as equipment and modifications up to certification. This huge task was made even greater in the past when civilian projects were also under test. Almost every aircraft type (fighters, bombers, transports, reconnaissance and electronic warfare) presently in front line service, as well as those under development, can be found on the Akhtubinsk flight-lines and parking areas.Thanks to the outstanding weather, most of them are kept in the open. They include among others: L-39, MiG-25, Mig-29, Mig-31, Su-24, Su-25, Su-27, Su-29, Su-34, Su-35, Su-37, An-12, An-24, An-26, An-72, Tu-134, Tu-154, A-50, Yak-40, L410 and Tu-22M, Tu-95MS, Tu-142. Many older aircraft types such as the MiG-23UB, Su-17M4 and UM3, whose numbers on the front-line inventory are rapidly dwindling, are used as chase planes for the various flight tests when they are not acting as test platforms. For qualification trials of air-to-air missiles and their homing equipment, target drone aircraft are used. |
