The Antonov An-225 Mriya, (NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift transport airplane that was built by Antonov (ASTC). It was designed for the Soviet space program as a replacement for the Myasishchev M-4 'Bison' for the purpose of carrying the Energia rocket boosters and to also be able to carry the Buran space shuttle in piggy-back mode much the same as the American Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.The An-225 first flew on 21 December, 1988. Only one An-225 is currently in service. It is commercially available for carrying ultra heavy and/or oversize freight. It can carry up to 227 metric tons (250 short tons) of cargo. A second An-225 was partially built in connection with the Soviet space program but was never finished. This unit is finally nearing completion as of 2005. The construction of further units will depend upon demand for oversize cargolifting.At 600 metric tons, the An-225 is the world's heaviest aircraft, although its wingspan is less than that of the "Spruce Goose", Howard Hughes' flying boat, which never flew more a single, short, low-altitude test flight. Both the An-124 and An-225 are larger than the C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the U.S. inventory. The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380 |

The An-225 Mriya (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-225 Мрія, NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift transport aircraft which was built by Antonov Design Bureau, and is the largest flying airplane ever built by the most commonly accepted measure,[1] maximum gross takeoff weight. The design, built to transport the Buran orbiter, was an enlargement of the successful An-124 Ruslan. Mriya (Мрія) means "Dream" (Inspiration) in Ukrainian.
With a maximum gross weight of 640 tonnes (1,411,000 lb), the An-225 is the world's heaviest and largest aircraft. The Hughes H-4 Hercules, known to most as the "Spruce Goose", had a greater wingspan and a greater overall height, but was considerably shorter, and due to the materials used in its construction, also lighter. In addition, the Hercules only flew once and never climbed above 70 ft (21.3 m), making the An-225 the largest aircraft in the world to take off multiple times.[2] The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380 airliner, and considerably bigger than the Antonov An-124, Boeing 747-400ERF, and Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, the nearest equivalent heavy airlifters.
In November 2004, FAI placed the An-225 in the Guinness Book of Records for its 240 records.
The Antonov An-225 is commercially available for flying any over-sized payload due the unique size of its cargo deck. Currently there is only one aircraft operating but a second mothballed airframe is being reconditioned and is scheduled for completion around mid to late 2008 |

It has a wingspan of more than 88 metres, a maximum speed of 530 miles per hour and can carry the equivalent weight of 240 Mini cars.
The Antonov An-225 is the world's heaviest and largest cargo plane and yesterday it landed at East Midlands Airport.
About 20 people braved the cold and gathered at the airport's Aeropark to watch the Antonov land.

Het grootste vliegtuig ter wereld, de Antonov AN-225, is Tweede Kerstdag na de nodige vertraging om 18.59 uur op Schiphol geland. De komst van het toestel trok duizenden spotters naar de luchthaven.
De zesmotorige AN-225 kan 250.000 kilo aan lading meenemen. Door zijn gewicht kon het vrachtvliegtuig geen gebruik maken van de avioducten over de A4, zodat het aan de westkant van de A4 moet worden geladen, op het J-platform.
Het was de eerste keer dat het toestel met een spanwijdte van 88,40 meter, een lengte van 84 meter en een hoogte van 18,20 meter Schiphol aandeed.
