Staying on old Route 66 we drove to the heart of Albuquerque to find Old Town. Established nearly 300 years ago in April of 1706 by Spanish settlers. Old Town was a colonial farming village and a military outpost along the Camino Real between Chihuahua and Santa Fe. The central plaza was full of people and it was easy to see it's historical roots by the traditional Spanish pattern of a central plaza surrounded by a church, homes and government buildings.
We strolled around for a while and then stumbled upon a rattlesnake museum. Yipeeee snakes and crawly things. The museum was really cool and we even got a certificate of bravery for visiting. Check out the video for some close up shots of these amazing critters. |

Don Burns and I just finished installing a Hang Glide!! flight simulator at the Fantasy of Flight Museum.
http://www.andesengineering.com/Products/HangGlide/
This installation brings to four the number of major aviation museums where you can see and enjoy these marvelous flight simulators. Besides the Fantasy of Flight Museum our simulators can now be seen at Museum of Flight in Seattle, the Anderson-Abruzzo, Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, and the Oshkosh Air Venture Museum.
The Fantasy of Flight Museum, between Tampa and Orlando, is one of the coolest aviation museums I have seen. The owner, Kermit Weeks (another south Florida Palmetto High School graduate like me!), flies most of the scores of antiques and warbirds in his collection. Kermit also has done a fair bit of hang gliding both solo and tandem with Malcolm at Wallaby. Kermit and a couple of his friends had fun competing with each other on the hang gliding simulator after we got it up and running. Not surprisingly for such an accomplished pilot, Kermit flew the simulator like a champ. When they finished, Kermit walked out to the tarmac and took his friend up in what may be the only operational two seat P-40 Warhawk (of Flying Tigers fame). What a life!
When in central Florida this is a museum not to be missed. It is only 15 miles from Wallaby Ranch. When it's blown out for hang gliding go fly the Hang Glide!! simulator.
During the week we were in Florida working at the museum we stayed at the Wallaby Ranch. Malcolm Jones treated us like royalty although I suspect he treats everyone that way! I never found time to fly but I will definitely go back. There seems to be absolutely everything a pilot could wish for and I can't imagine a better place to vacation for a hang glider pilot. Malcolm and Lori are the most gracious host and hostess and Don and I thank them for taking such good care of us.
You will recall seeing a very early version some years ago of Hang Glide!! at the Soaring Convention in Ontario, CA however the differences between that one and the current version are night and day.
HangGlide!! is an interactive, full-scale, first person flight simulator, built for entertainment and training. Participants experience flight and control that resembles closely that of a real hang glider. By use of multiple, large, synchronized displays, HangGlide!! convincingly immerses the user in the virtual world.
Participants are given the task to land their hang glider as close as possible to a bulls-eye target. For assistance, a second glider flies ahead of the participant's glider, leading the way. The experience teaches fundamental weight shift control skills as used by real hang-gliders, and glide management. Glide management involves choosing a flight path that takes into account the hang-glider's glide slope (amount of units of distance flown forward for every unit of descent), and choosing turn points that will put the pilot directly on the bulls-eye when it comes time to land.
The visual database is of an actual hang-gliding flying site named Ed Levin Park, in Milpitas, California. Takeoff positions and landing site are the same positions on the terrain, complete with tree obstacles, fences and all visual cues of the actual flying site.
The flight dynamics model used to control the hang glider is the result of years of development and research. At its base is a rigid-body dynamics package. Forces are applied to the rigid body which are derived from static load and stability testing data taken during glider certification processes. The hang glider can be looped, if the pilot is skilled enough!
The flight simulator is designed primarily for high-traffic participation as would be found in a flight museum or location based entertainment venue. The unit has a single button control to initiate each participant's experience and can be left largely unattended. Flights last about 90 seconds with a 20 second interim stage, replaying the previous participant's landing and landing score, which allows time for the next participant in line to get in place for their flight. |

Experience Estun-Bah!
The word "Estun-Bah" is an Apache word meaning "For the Woman." The Native American flute was traditionally used as a courting instrument. A man would play the most beautiful song on his flute before approaching a woman to show his honor and respect for the woman.

Expression of Sound
"I believe music is the language of our soul. One song can capture your heart and elevate your emotions. One melody can sweep you off to your own personal paradise. Music is and always has been an important part of native culture. As traditional sounds blend with more contemporary sounds. One element remains forever embedded in the sounds of Native America- the love and respect for all life. These are songs and melodies of the heart. I hope you understand my thoughts and expressions."

The Belém National Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional de Belém) is the official residence of the President of Portugal. It is located in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Belém, close to the Tagus river and near many touristic and cultural attractions. This Palace was one of the many that the nobility built on the outskirts of Lisbon in the 17th and 18th centuries; it was later converted into a royal residence.
The Palace was originally built in the 16th century by the nobleman Manuel of Portugal, over a hill facing the Tagus, near the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, which had recently been completed. In the 17th century the palace came into the possession of the Counts of Aveiras. The five buildings that compose the main façade of the Palace date to the second half of the 17th century, with terraces from which the landscape could be enjoyed.
At the beginning of the 18th century, King John V bought the Palace and proceeded to expand and redecorate its interiors. The Great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake did not affect the Palace, which during the reign of Queen Mary I gained a small zoo with African animals (now inactive) and a new horse arena, designed in Neoclassical style by the Italian Giacomo Azzolini (the arena now houses the National Coach Museum).
The courtyards and interiors of the Palace have decorations dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, Belém Palace was used by the royal family, along with other residences like the Palace of Queluz and the nearby Ajuda Palace. It was also used to house foreign visitors.
In 1912, after the Portuguese Republic was established, the country's Presidents started inhabiting the Palace, at least for short periods. Nowadays it is the official residence of the Presidents of Portugal. While President Ramalho Eanes lived in the Palace, both Mário Soares and Jorge Sampaio used it merely as a work place, living in their private residences.
The square in front of the Palace, the Afonso de Albuquerque Square, is named after the first conqueror of India, Afonso de Albuquerque, and offers the best views of Belém Palace. The site of this square used to be a harbour, built in 1753. In 1807, Queen Mary I, Prince John VI and the royal family fled Lisbon from this harbour to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, to escape the Napoleonic troops which had invaded Portugal.

In 1979, under towering cumulus clouds, two hikers in the Ojito Wilderness Area northwest of Albuquerque made a colossal find. Surrounded by pinion pines and ancient petroglyphs, four, huge, largely intact fossilized dinosaur tailbones were found partially exposed in a sandstone ledge. The size of the bones created enormous excitement, nothing like this had been found!
For the next twenty-five years the mystery of Seismosaurus unraveled. The discovery had a significant impact on our understanding of dinosaurs -- at 120 feet "Sam" was perhaps the longest dinosaur ever discovered! In 2005 "Sam" made his public debut in a new Jurassic exhibit created at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. In addition, the use of new technology from the Los Alamos National Laboratories took paleontology to a new level by pioneering new techniques to find and analyze dinosaur bones. From the thrill of discovery to the grand unveiling, this COLORES! tells "Sam's" fantastic story. Featured are the key players in Sam's story and through the magic of special 3-D animation we get a glimpse of what Seismosaurus looked like a 150 million years ago.

Rem Koolhaas
Casa da Música is a major concert hall space in Porto, Portugal. It was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, and was built as part of Porto's project for European Culture Capital in 2001 but was only finished in the first half of 2005 and immediately became an icon in the city. The Building engineers were Ove Arup - London together with Afassociados, Oporto.
Although the opening day concert took place on the April 14 with Clã and Lou Reed, the building was inaugurated on April 15, 2005 by the Portuguese president. The Prime-minister and many other notable politicians and Porto society were present for the concert by the Orquestra Nacional do Porto.
Casa da Música was built just across from one of the main traffic and business centers of the city, Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque , known as Rotunda da Boavista. The place where the building now sits used to be a holding place for the electric cars that ran in Porto. Although construction ran over four years over schedule and cost roughly €100M, the building process brought new engineering challenges in order to create its unusual configuration.
The building's design has been highly acclaimed worldwide. Nicolai Ouroussoff, architecture critic from the New York Times, classified it as the "most attractive project the architect Rem Koolhaas has ever built" and saying it's "a building whose intellectual ardor is matched by its sensual beauty". He also compares it to the "exuberant design" in Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. "Only looking into the original aspect of the building, this is one of the most important concert halls built in the last 100 years". He compares it to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Los Angeles, and the Berliner Philharmonie.
Casa da Música has two main auditoriums, though many other areas of the building can very easily be adapted for concerts and other musical activity (workshops, educational activities, etc.).
The large auditorium has an initial capacity of 1,238 people, but can vary according to the occasion.
The small auditorium is tremendously flexible, and has no definite number in relation to the capacity. On average the room has capacity for 300 people sitting down, and 650 people standing, though these can drastically change depending on the size of the stage, its location, the arrangement of the chairs, the presence and size of sound and recording equipment, etc.
The restaurant at the top of the building was opened far later than was originally planned. Functioning since August 2006, the restaurant's original planned capacity for 250 people was decreased to space for some 150.
