The A350 XWB Family represents a 21st Century solution for an aircraft in this size category. The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is Airbus' response to market demand for a medium capacity long range wide-body family. Designed with airlines' priorities in mind, the A350 XWB confronts the challenges of high fuel prices, rising passenger expectations and increasing environmental concerns. Available from 2013, it has an entirely new, uncompromised, 21st Century design with a wider and taller fuselage for extra space and passenger comfort. A complete family of airliners sized to generate cost reductions and provide unprecedented operating flexibility for airlines; three basic passenger versions are being offered. With a range of up to 8,300nm/15,380km they include the A350-800 for 270 passengers in a spacious three-class configuration; the A350-900 for 314 passengers and the A350-1000 seating 350 passengers. An ultra long-range version, the A350--900R, will fly even further while a freighter version, the A350--900F, will complement the passenger models. As befits the most advanced aircraft family in its segment, the A350 XWB is able to provide greater economy on long-range markets and is equally attractive as a route opener or as part of a multi-type Airbus fleet offering optimized network solutions. Thanks to the application of the latest innovations, the A350 XWB is able to offer 20 per cent lower cash operating costs per seat than competing aircraft in this size category and fuel efficiency improvements of up to 25 per cent per seat. The fly-by-wire A350 XWB Family is a significant addition to the Airbus product range. A member of the Airbus FBW Family of aircraft, it benefits from the same operational commonality as the other members of the Family. This handling and flight deck commonality allows airlines to benefit from the unique Airbus Family concept of cross crew qualification and mixed fleet flying, and will ensure smooth introduction into service.

The A350 XWB Family represents a 21st Century solution for an aircraft in this size category. The A350 XWB brings together the very latest in aerodynamics, design and advanced technologies. With an airframe made of more than 60 per cent new materials, chosen for their superior weight and strength properties, the A350 XWB has the most efficient structure in terms of design concept. In particular, its innovative use of all-new Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) panelled fuselage skins cater for much easier maintenance and reparability. This design also allows weight savings via optimum fibre lay-up and skin thickness tailored to the requirements of the location. The all-new composite wing design lifts the A350 XWB cruise speed to Mach 0.85 (the cruise speed of the A380). Excellent aerodynamics, together with advanced high lift devices and advanced systems contribute to greater fuel economy in all flight regimes and on the ground. Moreover, the new Rolls Royce Trent XWB engine, producing up to 92,000lb of thrust, will draw on the latest manufacturing, materials and thermodynamic expertise to deliver lower fuel burn and lower maintenance costs while minimising the noise 'footprint' around airports and reducing environmental impact. Building on the A380 interactive cockpit and systems, the XWB Family will feature- modern functions such as an airport navigation system and the brake to vacate, a system designed to optimize braking for passenger comfort and better runway usage. The A350 XWB is designed to give exemplary reliability in service with longer maintenance intervals and customised maintenance schedules to help provide airlines with higher operating productivity. The A350 XWB Family represents a 21st Century solution for an aircraft in this size category.

The A350 XWB has been designed with passenger well-being at the forefront, offering the quietest, most comfortable cabin in this aircraft size category. With a cabin cross-section of 220 inches/5.58 meters from armrest to armrest, the A350 XWB provides wider aisles and the widest seats in the industry. Compared to its nearest competitor, the A350 XWB cabin is 5 inches/12.7cm wider, offering superior levels of spaciousness for passengers. Seating in economy, for example, can be either eight abreast for high comfort or nine abreast for extra high efficiency. The modular cabin features of the A350 XWB Family allow overnight reconfiguration, enabling airlines to easily adapt to specific seasonal needs and changing markets. This capability further enhances operating flexibility. Thanks to leading edge cabin design, passengers will also benefit from more headroom, wider panoramic windows, and larger overhead storage space. The use of latest technologies results in enhanced air quality and cabin environment regulation. Improved purity of cabin air is provided by gaseous filters and Ozone/Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) converters. More precise temperature control zones, draft free air circulation, controlled cabin humidity of up to 16 per cent during flight cruise and a typical cabin altitude at or below 6,000 ft, further enhance passenger well-being.

Sixteen oil rig workers' and two pilots' lives hang in the balance when their Super Puma helicopter is struck by lightning in a storm while flying to the Brae oilfield. The lightning strikes the tail rotor and it fails. The pilots perform an emergency autorotation and ditch in the sea. Everyone on board gets on a life raft, which is overcrowded and leaking in giant swells. Despite the conditions, the workers and pilots are rescued. The lightning struck due to the composite materials in the rotor blades, raising concerns among the investigators; more than 50% of the structures of the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 then being developed are slated to be composites, while the Airbus A380 is designed to be 20% composites.

http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum Airbus is an aircraft manufacturing subsidiary of EADS, a European aerospace concern. Based in Toulouse, France and with significant activity across Europe, the company produces around half of the world's jet airliners. Airbus began as a consortium of aerospace manufacturers. Consolidation of European defence and aerospace companies around the turn of the century allowed the establishment of a simplified joint stock company in 2001, owned by EADS (80%) and BAE Systems (20%). After a protracted sale process BAE sold its shareholding to EADS on 13 October 2006. Airbus employs around 57,000 people at sixteen sites in four European Union countries: Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Final assembly production is at Toulouse (France) and Hamburg (Germany). Airbus has subsidiaries in the United States, Japan and China. The Airbus product line started with the A300, the world's first twin-aisle, twin-engined aircraft. A shorter, re-winged, re-engined variant of the A300 is known as the A310. Building on its success, Airbus launched the A320 with its innovative fly-by-wire control system. The A320 has been, and continues to be, a great commercial success. The A318 and A319 are shorter derivatives with some of the latter under construction for the corporate biz-jet market (Airbus Corporate Jet). A stretched version is known as the A321 and is proving competitive with later models of the Boeing 737.The longer-range products, the twin-jet A330 and the four-engine A340, have efficient wings, enhanced by winglets. The Airbus A340-500 has an operating range of 16 700 kilometres (9000 nautical miles), the second longest range of any commercial jet after the Boeing 777-200LR (range of 17 446 km or 9420 nautical miles). The company is particularly proud of its use of fly-by-wire technologies and the common cockpit systems in use throughout the aircraft family, which make it much easier to train crew. Airbus is studying a replacement for the A320 series, tentatively dubbed NSR, for "New Short-Range aircraft. Those studies indicated a maximum fuel efficiency gain of 9-10% for the NSR. Airbus however opted to enhance the existing A320 design using new winglets and working on aerodynamical improvements. This "A320 Enhanced" should have a fuel efficiency improvement of around 4-5%, shifting the launch of a A320 replacement to 2017-2018. In July 2007, Airbus delivered its last A300 to FedEx, marking the end of the A300/A310 production line. Airbus intends to relocate Toulouse A320 final assembly activity to Hamburg, and A350/A380 production in the opposite direction as part of its Power8 organization plan begun under ex-CEO Christian Streiff.Airbus supplied replacement parts and service for Concorde until its retirement in 2003. was formally established as a Groupement d'Interet Economique (Economic Interest Group or GIE) on 18 December 1970.The name "Airbus" was taken from a non-proprietary term used by the airline industry in the 1960s to refer to a commercial aircraft of a certain size and range, for this term was acceptable to the French linguistically. Aerospatiale and Deutsche Airbus each took a 36.5% share of production work, Hawker Siddeley 20% and Fokker-VFW 7%.Each company would deliver its sections as fully equipped, ready-to-fly items. In October 1971 the Spanish company CASA acquired a 4.2% share of Airbus Industrie, with Aerospatiale and Deutsche Airbus reducing their stakes to 47.9%.In January 1979 British Aerospace, which had absorbed Hawker Siddeley in 1977, acquired a 20% share of Airbus Industrie. The majority shareholders reduced their shares to 37.9%, while CASA retained its 4.2%. In 1972, the A300 made its maiden flight and the first production model, the A300B2 entered service in 1974. Initially the success of the consortium was poor but by 1979 there were 81 aircraft in service. It was the launch of the A320 in 1981 that guaranteed the status of Airbus as a major player in the aircraft market - the aircraft had over 400 orders before it first flew, compared to 15 for the A300 in 1972.The production assets to the new company, Airbus SAS, in return for shareholdings in that company.

Swissair A330 Engine Failure....CAUGHT ON TAPE
Time :
0 : 22
The Airbus A330 is a large-capacity, wide-body, medium-to-long-range commercial passenger airliner. It was developed at the same time as the four-engined Airbus A340, and will likely be replaced by the Airbus A350. Airbus intended the A330 to compete directly in the ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operation Performance Standards) market, specifically with the Boeing 767. The A330's fuselage and wings are virtually identical to those of the smaller A340 variants, although it has different engines. The A330 basic fuselage design is inherited from the Airbus A300, as is the nose/cockpit section and the fly-by-wire system and flightdeck from the A320. Both the A330 and A340 are assembled on the same final assembly line at Toulouse-Blagnac, France. By the end of February 2008, a total of 895 A330s had been ordered and 526 delivered. There are two main variants of the A330. The A330-300 was launched in 1987 with introduction into service in 1993. The A330-200 was launched in 1995, introduced in 1998 and comes in passenger, freighter and tanker versions. IN THIS VIDEO, a few seconds after take-off from Zurich airport (in 2001), the left engine of this A330 flames out. This phenomenon happens when the fuel combustion can not be realised inside the engine (lack of oxygen, water ingestion ...). The engine can shut down and must be restarted in flight.
