AH-1 Cobra Crashes in Desert. The AH-1 Cobra is an attack helicopter manufactured by Bell. It shares a common engine, transmission and rotor system with the older UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed "Huey"). The AH-1 is also sometimes referred to as the "HueyCobra" or "Snake".The AH-1 was once the backbone of the United States Army's attack helicopter fleet, but has been replaced by the AH-64 Apache in Army service. Upgraded versions continue to fly with the United States Army National Guard and several other users. The AH-1 twin engine versions remain in service with United States Marine Corps as the service's primary attack helicopter.By June 1967, the first AH-1G HueyCobras had been delivered. Originally designated as UH-1H, the "A" for attack designation was soon adopted and when the improved UH-1D became the UH-1H, the HueyCobra became the AH-1G.The AH-1 was initially considered a variant of the H-1 line, resulting in the G series letter.Bell built 1,116 AH-1Gs for the US Army between 1967 and 1973, and the Cobras chalked up over a million operational hours in Vietnam. The AH-1 Cobras were in use by the Army during the Tet offensive in 1968 and through the end of the Vietnam War. Huey Cobras provided fire support for ground forces, escorted transport helicopters and other roles. They also formed "hunter killer" teams by pairing with OH-6A scout helicopters. A team featured one OH-6 flying slow and low to find enemy forces. If the OH-6 drew fire, the Cobra could strike at the then revealed enemy.Huey Cobras supported U.S. Marine operations, during 1983 invasion of Grenada.During Gulf War of 1990-91, the Cobras and SeaCobras deployed in a support role. The Marines deployed 91 SeaCobras and the Army 140 Cobras. Three AH-1s were lost in accidents during fighting and afterwards.U.S. Cobras were also used in operations throughout the 1990s.Cobra helicopter gunships were also used widely by the Israeli Air Force in the 1982 Lebanon War to destroy Syrian armor and fortification.IAF Cobras destroyed dozens of Syrian armored fighting vehicles, including many of the modern Soviet T-72 main battle tanks. The Pakistan Army has also used the AH-1 as its primary gunship helicopter during the mid-1970s tribal uprising in Pakistan's Baluchistan province, where donated Iranian AH-1J were used against tribal insurgents. The recent insurgencies in the Waziristan regions has seen Pakistani AH-1s seeing action against Taliban & Al Qaeda fighters and their tribal allies, as well as operations against insurgents in another more recent Baluch tribal uprising recently led by armed Bugti and Marri tribesmen under the late Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and the Balochistan Liberation Army since the mid-2000s.AH-1 Cobras continue to operate with the US military, by the US Marine Corps notably in the ongoing conflict in Iraq. The US Army phased out the AH-1 during the 1990s and retired the AH-1 from active service in March 1999.The Army retired the AH-1 from reserves in September 2001. The retired AH-1s have been passed to other nations and to the USDA Forest Service # Crew: 2 - one pilot, one CPG (co-pilot/gunner) # Length: 44 ft 5 in (13.4 m) # Rotor diameter: 44 ft (13.4 m) # Height: 13 ft 5 in (4.1 m) # Empty weight: 6,073 lb (2,754 kg) # Max takeoff weight: 9,500 lb (4,309 kg) # Powerplant: 1× AVCO Lycoming T53-L-13 turboshaft, 1,100 shp * Maximum speed: 190 knots (219 mph, 352 km/h) * Range: 310 nmi (357 mi, 574 km) * Service ceiling 11,400 ft (3,475 m) * Rate of climb: 1,230 ft/min (6.25 m/s)

Bell's XH-40 prototype first flew on 22 October 1956 and entered production in the same year as the HU-1A. The "HU" designation spawned the famous "Huey" nickname, although the re-alignment of US service designations in 1962 changed it into the familiar UH-1. The UH-1 made the theory of air cavalry practical, as the new tactics called for US forces to be highly mobile across a wide area. Unlike before, they would not stand and fight long battles, and they would not stay and hold positions. Instead, the plan was that the troops carried by fleets of Hueys would range across the country, to fight the enemy at times and places of their own choice. It soon became clear that the unarmed UH-1 troop helicopters were vulnerable against ground fire from Viet Cong and NVA troops, particularly as they came down to drop their troops in a landing zone. Without friendly support from artillery or ground forces, the only way to pacify a landing zone was from the air, preferably with a machine that could closely escort the transport helicopters, and loiter over the landing zone as the battle progressed. By 1962 a small number of armed HU-1As (UH-1As) were used as escorts, armed with multiple machineguns and rocket mounts.

This is a video I took while sitting on top of OP Left at 29 Palms, California in the Quackenbush impact area on February 2, 2008.. This video is not the best quality because it was taken from a digital camera. What you will see is mortar fire suppressing a notional anti aircraft enemy target. To the right you you will see a glowing mark, that is the artillery illumination mark that I called in I believe. (I forget I called so many in that day). The Cobra then comes in and the FAC (Forward Air Controller) tells the pilot from the mark, where the target is. The pilot once cleared "hot" first attacks with his 20mm machine gun, then follows up with a barrage of rockets (you will see them fired the second time it comes around and the impacts will be on the lower mid left). The pilot is cleared for an immediate re-attack and comes in and does his run again. The pilot then egresses and is covered by mortar suppression. The 81mm mortar platoon is 2/23 Weapons Company, and the firing artillery battery is 5/14 November battery (my unit), both reserve units. Hope you enjoy, any Marines feel free to correct any inaccuracies.

http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum The AH-64 Apache is an American all-weather day-night military attack helicopter and is the United States Army's principal attack helicopter, and is the successor to the AH-1 Cobra. The AH-64 is a twin-engined helicopter with four-bladed main and tail rotors. It has a crew of two which sit in tandem. The main fixed armament is a 30 mm M230 chain gun, it is also able to carry a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rockets on four hard points mounted on its stub-wing pylons. Designed by Hughes Helicopters in response to the Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter Program. McDonnell Douglas purchased Hughes Helicopters and continued the development of the AH-64 resulting in the AH-64D Apache Longbow which is currently produced by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. The United States Army's Apaches have been in action in Panama, Gulf War (destroying 500 tanks), Afghanistan, and Iraq. Following the cancellation of the AH-56 Cheyenne in favor of USAF and Marine projects like the A-10 and Harrier, the United States Army sought an aircraft to fill an anti-armor attack role that would still fall under Army command (the 1948 Key West Agreement having forbidden the Army from commanding fixed-wing aircraft). The Army wanted an aircraft better than the AH-1 Cobra in firepower, performance and range. It would have the maneuverability to fly nap-of-the-earth (NoE) missions. To this end, the US Army issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) for an Advanced Attack Helicopter (AAH) in 1972 Proposals were submitted by five manufacturers: Bell, Boeing-Vertol (teamed with Grumman), Hughes, Lockheed, and Sikorsky. In 1973, the U.S. Department of Defense selected finalists Bell and Hughes Aircraft's Toolco Aircraft Division (later Hughes Helicopters). This began the phase 1 of the competition. Each company built prototype helicopters and went through a flight test program. Hughes' Model 77/YAH-64A prototype first flew on September 30, 1975, while Bell's Model 409/YAH-63A prototype first flew the following day. After evaluating test results, the Army selected Hughes' YAH-64A over Bell's YAH-63A in 1976. Reasons for selecting the YAH-64A included its more damage tolerant four-blade main rotor and the instability of the YAH-63's tricycle landing gear arrangement. The AH-64A then entered phase 2 of the AAH program. This called for building three preproduction AH-64s, and upgrading the two YAH-64A flight prototypes and the ground test unit up to the same standard.Weapons and sensor systems were integrated and tested during this time, including the new Hellfire missile

http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum The Israeli Air Force (IAF; Hebrew: זרוע האויר והחלל, Zroa HaAvir VeHahalal, "Air and Space Arm", commonly known as חיל האוויר Hel HaAvir, "Air Corps") is the air force of the Israel Defense Forces. The current Commander in Chief is Aluf Elyezer Shkedy. The Israeli Air Force has approximately 1000 aircraft. Following the Yom Kippur War, most of Israel's military aircraft have been obtained from the United States. Those included the F-4 Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk, F-15 Eagle, E-2 Hawkeye and others. The Israeli Air Force has also operated a number of domestically-produced types like the IAI Nesher, and later, the more advanced IAI Kfir, which were unauthorised derivatives of the French Dassault Mirage 5 (Israel bought 50 Mirage 5's from Dassault Aviation, but they were not delivered due to the French embargo during the Yom Kippur war). The Kfir was adapted to utilize a more powerful US engine, produced under license in Israel. In 1976, the IAF participated in the Operation Entebbe rescue mission in Uganda using the C-130 Hercules for transport. During the 1980s and 1990s the IAF was equipped with a variety of additional U.S. aircraft (e.g. F-16, AH-1 Cobra, AH-64 Apache, and C-130 Hercules). During the 1982 Lebanon War, IAF planes destroyed many Syrian air defences and shot down 100 Syrian aircraft without a single fighter lost (Syria disputes this claim). However, one IAF A-4 Skyhawk, piloted by Captain Aharon Achiaz, was lost to a PLO SA-7 missile, with the pilot being captured. IAF AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships destroyed dozens of Syrian armored fighting vehicles and other ground targets, including some T-72 main battle tanks. For some years after the war's official end, however, IAF AH-1 Cobras continued to mount attacks on Hezbollah and PLO positions in south Lebanon.

Israeli Air Force
Time :
2 : 10
http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum While this operation was taking place, only a handful of aircraft were left to guard Israeli skies. The War of Attrition In the War of Attrition, the IAF operated in air "dog fight" and bombing of strategic targets deep within enemy's territory. Notable operations were: * September 11, 1969: IAF planes shot down 12 Egyptian jet fighters in dogfights. * September 26, 1969 - Operation Rooster 53: IAF Super Frelon and Sikorsky CH-53 Yas'ur helicopters carried paratroopers in a raid to "hijack" and airlift back an advanced Soviet P-12 radar deployed in Egypt near Suez. A CH-53 helicopter carried the 4-ton radar back, tethered underneath it. * January 7, 1970: the IAF started performing deep strikes on Egyptian targets, in order to force them to cease artillery and commando attacks on Israeli forces arrayed along the east side of the Suez Canal. * July 30, 1970: the IAF ambushed and shot down 5 Egyptian MiG-21 fighters. Yom Kippur War In the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, the IAF suffered heavy casualties from Soviet anti-aircraft surface-to-air missiles but managed to regroup and assist IDF's ground forces and later bomb infrastructure targets in Syria and Egypt. One of the first battles in the war's air front was the Ofira Air Battle, involving two Israeli Phantoms against 28 Egyptian Mig-17s. IAF helicopters proved to be highly useful in logistics and rescue efforts (MedEvac). According to Israel, during that war, the IAF lost 102 planes while the Egyptian Air Force lost 235 and the Syrian Air Force lost 135, although these figures are contested. The IAF was certainly not able to achieve the aerial supremacy during the Yom Kippur War that it did during the Six-Day War. Growth (1973-82) Following the Yom Kippur War, most of Israel's military aircraft have been obtained from the United States. Those included the F-4 Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk, F-15 Eagle, E-2 Hawkeye and others. The Israeli Air Force has also operated a number of domestically-produced types like the IAI Nesher, and later, the more advanced IAI Kfir, which were unauthorised derivatives of the French Dassault Mirage 5 Israel bought and paid (and was reimbursed for) for 50 Mirage 5's from Dassault Aviation, but they were not delivered due to the French embargo during the Yom Kippur war]. Bombing of the Osiraq nuclear reactor On June 7, 1981 8 IAF F-16A fighters covered by 6 F-15A jets flew in Operation Opera, the destruction of the Iraqi Osiraq nuclear reactor. Eight IAF F-16 fighters flew to Iraq and bombed the nuclear facilities of Osiraq. Among the pilots that took part in the attack was the late Colonel Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut. He died on Saturday, February 1, 2003, when the US Space Shuttle Columbia he was riding on was engulfed in flames upon reentry. The attack was code named Operation Opera (sometimes also referred to as Operation Babylon or Operation Ofra) by Israel. The planes returned on almost no fuel. 1982 Lebanon War During the 1982 Lebanon War, IAF planes destroyed the Syrian air defence without a single fighter lost and shot down 100 Syrian aircraft (however Syria claims to have shot down Israeli aircraft during the operation). On October 1, 1985 Operation Wooden Leg undertook the bombing of PLO Headquarters in Tunis, Tunisia, the longest combat mission ever undertaken by the IAF: 2300 kilometers, involving in flight refueling by an IAF Boeing 707. The attack provoked a strong outcry, even among the United States, Israel's strongest ally.
