The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support (CAS) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control, guiding other attack aircraft against ground targets. It is the first US Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support (CAS) of ground forces. The official nickname comes from the P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a plane that was particularly effective at the CAS mission. However, the A-10 is more commonly known as Warthog or simply Hog. In the USAF inventory, the same airframe is also designated OA-10 when used primarily in a forward air control role. |

The "Warthog" first flew from Davis Monthan AB in 1975 and was designed to confront the threat of massed Soviet armour pouring into Western Europe. To do this job, it was designed to be extremely hard to kill, able to carry a wide variety of air-to ground weapons and had to be able to fly with minimal support and maintenance. The pilot sits in a titanium armoured "bathtub" and the fuselage can take hits from armour-piercing and high-explosive shells up to 23mm calibre.
Its main weapon is the GAU-8 30mm cannon. This fires foot-long shells that weigh a pound each at a rate of 3900 depleted uranium or high explosive rounds a minute, just one of which would destroy most tanks. Also, the A-10 can use Hellfire and Maverick missiles as well various bombs, guided or otherwise.

Although the A-10 can carry a considerable weight of disposable stores, its primary built-in weapon is the 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun. One of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown, it fires large depleted uranium armor-piercing shells at a rate of about 4,200 rounds per minute (50 rounds per second during the first second, 70 rounds per second thereafter). The massive shells and high muzzle velocity allow the Thunderbolt II to destroy heavily armored main battle tanks with as few as six direct hits. The gun is accurate as well, being capable of placing 80% of its shots within a 20-foot wide circle from a distance of 1 mile while the aircraft is in flight. |

The A-10 was designed for high-survivability with a titanium cover surrounding both the cockpit, ammunition and fuel tank. Placement of the engines decreases the infrared signature lowering it's vulnerablity to heatseeking missiles and ground fire.

On October 4th and 5th 2006, two A-10 Thunderbolt II's (81-0976 and 81-0952) from Spangdahlem airbase (ETAD), Germany stopped by at Leeuwarden airbase (EHLW), the Netherlands, for a lunch stop. They were participating in an exercise above the Marnewaard area.
