FRANCE, Paris : Men's fashion spring/summer 2009: elaborate presentation at Martin Margiela fashion house.
SYNTHE
No SYNTHE is available.
DOPESHEET
The elusive Martin Margiela staged an elaborate presentation. For his men's collection he did a living, life-size look book. Fabrics were delicate, cuts perfect and pastel colours accentuated the summery allure. Lots of details and effects tricked the eye, such as oversized adornments, becoming collars and sleeves. The laser-cut jackets and tailored feel reminds us that this Belgian designer is in perfect control. A touch of rock n' roll with a shiny effect on the suits made with mirrored squares from a disco ball didn't fail to please.

Paris 01 October 2006 -- Belgian designer Martin Margiela presented an incredibly feminine collection for Spring and Summer 2007. A seductive slit occurs as much on dresses as on a trouser leg. The wide brimmed hat is back in force in a variety of forms, as are padded shoulders! |

Maison Martin Margiela studied at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts along with the legendary avantgarde fashion collective the Antwerp Six. Although Margiela was only temporarily involved with the group, many still considder him to be the "7th" member of the collective. After graduation in 1980 he worked as a freelance designer for five years. Between 1985 and 1987 he worked for Jean Paul Gaultier, before showing his first collection under his own label in 1988. In 1997 he became, despite his non-traditional design, the chief designer of Hermés women's line. During the 1980s, the Japanese avantgardists, with Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garcons), had turned the fashion scene upside-down with their eccentric and ground-breaking designs. Martin Margiela and the Antwerp Six would carry on the work, revolting against the luxurious fashion world with garments of oversized proportions such as long arms, and with linings, seams and hems on the outside. The concept of deconstruction, also embraced by the aforementioned Rei Kawakubo, is important for the understanding of Martin Margiela's fashion statement. Mr Margiela famously redesigns by hand objects such as old wigs, canvases and silk scarves into couture garments. Martin Margiela has been called the J. D. Salinger of the fashion world, and rightly so -- he refuses to be photographed and will only be interviewed by fax. He won't even put his name on his clothes, branding them instead with a blank label. |

SPAIN, Barcelona : One luxury shopping address not to miss out in Barcelona: Frenchman Jean-Pierre Bua 's two stores. All the latest in vogue designers under one same roof.
SYNTHE
- Jean-Pierre Bua, Shop director
DOPESHEET
During your next trip to Barcelona, a shopping trip to Jean-Pierre Bua's two boutiques is a must, he's a Frenchman who has been based in the Catalan capital for about 20 years. Passionate about fashion, he was the first to import a selection of up to the minute clothing by the trendiest big names and designers to this concept-store, from Jean-Paul Gaultier to Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela. The shoes and accessories are not forgotten in this luxury store which changes each season
INTERVIEW (in french) Jean-Pierre Bua, Shop director:
Barcelona is love at first sight, I came by chance and spent a bit of time staying with people and a bit of family here and then I fell in love with the city which I really liked and I've been here 20 odd years now and I'm located here and completely adjusted. The city has the right balance, you can move here and it's not a small provincial town, it's a capital. We started up little by little, step by step we're here now, with two shops.
We were the first to bring Jean-Paul Gaultier to Barcelona, something which wasn't very easy at the start, seeing as the prices were raised, and people were a bit shocked, but one step at a time we've formed a clientele. At the moment Dries van Noten and Marni go down very well, Givenchy is starting to as well, Martin Margiela also works well. But we're trying to investigate a lot more because I think that now we have to offer our customers fashion, we have to return to fashion, stop the big marketing labels and offer fashion once again.

As goes the dress code for summer 2008, the emphasis is without doubt on the shoulders. Women with small frames can stand proud in a low-cut jacket with the "strict but elegant" allure of the Yves Saint Laurent secretaries, the minimalist and futurist look at Martin Margiela, or with the rigid and built-up shoulder pads at Alexander McQueen. Those who prefer rounded shapes can opt for "balloon" sleeves as seen on the spotty dresses by Christian Lacroix or on the structured jackets by Christian Dior. Another way to show off the shoulders is with asymmetry. Roman goddess style dresses are at the forefront with the return of the toga, worn supersized at Gianfranco Ferré. Frilled straps, a great classic, make a statement at Lanvin. Bare shoulders are the real trend for this summer with the strapless bustier dress. |

FRANCE, Paris : Discover the french designer Robert Normand's first boutique
SYNTHE
- Robert Normand, designer
DOPESHEET
It is in the Galerie Valois in the Palais Royale, next to the boutiques of Sisheido, Didier Ludot and Rick Owens that the designer Robert Normand has chosen to open his first boutique. A space split into two rooms, where the walls have been plastered and fitted with strips of black and white vinyl. This gives an overall graphic character to the shop whilst keeping the simple yet luxurious style of the boudoir on the first floor where you can go alone or with friends to try on clothes away from the stares of others. After having worked in many fashion houses (Lanvin, Lacoste, etc.) Robert Normand chose to create his own label in 2000. As the presentations of his collections take the form of events while a growing number of worldwide clients proudly wear his t-shirt jersey dresses, he will continue to create.
INTERVIEW (in french) with Robert Normand, designer
" I think that it has been a sleeping beauty for maybe thirty years. Very beautiful and dormant and then one by one there began to appear things which really had a superior vision. There are also people, like Martin Margiela who installed himself not in the interior, at the core but externally, and there is a whole new generation of young people who have installed themselves there.
What I like is that it captures my brand whilst at the same time recapturing all the elements of the Palais Royale. There is an aspect from the Directoire period; there could be a Legion of Honour aspect to the ceiling because it represents a medal. There are lots of allusions like that which I think is great! I really like the idea that we have adapted our views according to the place."
Boutique Robert Normand,
149 -- 150 Galerie Valois -- 75001 Paris.
