Born Diane Heidkrüger in Algermissen, near Hildesheim, Germany, she started her career as a dancer in London when she was still young, but after an injury she changed her mind and went to Paris to become a model. She won Elite's 1992 "Look of the Year" at the age of 15. Kruger soon became interested in acting and took lessons at the Cours Florent. She landed some small appearances in several French movies. She then changed her last name for use with English-speaking audiences, to ease her move to a Hollywood career.
Kruger made her onscreen debut in 2002 opposite Dennis Hopper and Christopher Lambert in The Piano Player, a TV-movie by Jean-Pierre Roux. She played Julie Wood in 2003's Michel Vaillant and Lisa in Wicker Park (2004), alongside Josh Hartnett and Rose Byrne. Her most notable role to date is her portrayal of Helen in Wolfgang Petersen's epic Troy. She was ranked #50 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2005.[1] In 2004, she starred with Nicholas Cage and Sean Bean (who co-starred with her in Troy) in the popular film National Treasure, going on to appear in movies such as Joyeux Noël (2005) and Copying Beethoven (2006). She will reprise her role as Dr. Abigail Chase for National Treasure: The Book of Secrets, The movie will be released in December 2007. Kruger married French actor Guillaume Canet on September 1, 2001. They have since filed for divorce, but acted alongside one another in 2005 film Joyeux Noël. She subsequently dated Canadian actor Joshua Jackson. Their relationship is rumored to have ended in March 2007, yet, no official reports have confirmed this.
Kruger absolvierte eine Ausbildung beim Royal Ballet in London und träumte von einer Tanzlaufbahn. Nach einer Verletzung wechselte sie ins Modelfach und ging mit 16 Jahren nach Paris. Als Model arbeitete sie unter ihrem richtigen Namen. Nach einigen Jahren nahm sie dort Schauspielunterricht und bekam schließlich kleinere Filmrollen. Um sich besser vermarkten zu können, verkürzte sie ihren Nachnamen seit ihrer Rolle in dem Film "Mon idole" auf "Kruger" (statt "Heidkrüger"), da dieser Name zu lang war und einen Umlaut enthielt.
Im Film Troja von Hollywood-Regisseur Wolfgang Petersen spielte sie die Rolle der Helena.
Eine Besonderheit an ihr ist, dass sie ihre Rollen selbst synchronisiert. Da sie jedoch keine einschlägige Erfahrung hat, ist dies in den entsprechenden Filmen (Das Vermächtnis der Tempelritter, Troja, Sehnsüchtig) deutlich zu hören und wirkt auf viele Zuschauer sehr befremdend. Dies brachte ihr schon häufig Kritik ein, da ihre (deutsche) Stimme im Gegensatz zu denen der Kollegen, die von professionellen Synchronsprechern gesprochen werden, eher lustlos und monoton klingt.
Diane Kruger war seit 2001 mit dem französischen Schauspieler Guillaume Canet verheiratet. Die beiden leben seit Anfang 2006 getrennt und haben die Scheidung eingereicht. Ihr neuer Partner war danach der kanadische Schauspieler Joshua Jackson, von dem sie sich im Frühjahr 2007 wieder getrennt hat. Presseberichten zufolge ist der Schauspieler Jack Huston aus der Huston-Filmdynastie und Neffe der Film-Diva Angelica Huston ihr neuer Freund.
Im Mai 2007 wird Kruger als erste Deutsche überhaupt bei den 60. Filmfestspielen von Cannes als Gastgeberin („maîtresse de cérémonie") die Auftaktzeremonie am 16. Mai sowie die Preisgala am 27. Mai moderieren.

Diane Nemerov nace en el seno de una adinerada familia judía de Nueva York. Es hermana del poeta Howard Nemerov. A los 14 años comienza su relación con Allan Arbus, con quién se casaría cumplido los 18 años. En los años cuarenta, los Arbus se dedicaron a la fotografía de moda en revistas como Esquire, Vogue y Harper's Bazaar. Entre 1955 a 1957, Diane Arbus toma clases con la fotógrafa austriaca Lisette Model, ejerciendo una gran influencia en el camino que más tarde tomaría. En esta época se divorcia de Allan, independizándose en su trabajo. La década del sesenta fueron sus años más productivos. Recorría los peligrosos barrios de Nueva York para seleccionar a los personajes que retrataría, en su mayoría enanos, playas nudistas, prostitutas, entre otros. La exposición que la dio a conocer al público mayoritario fue en 1967. Continuaba trabajando para revistas importantes retratando a celebridades como Norman Mailer, Mae West, Jorge Luis Borges. En 1971, después de una larga depresión, Diane Arbus se suicida. Un año más tarde su trabajo fue seleccionado para participar en la Bienal de Venecia, siendo la primera fotógrafa estadounidense en ser seleccionada, y el MoMA de Nueva York organizó su primera gran retrospectiva.
Su Obra
Influenciada por Model y la película Freaks ("La parada de los monstruos" o "Fenómenos") de Tod Browning, Diane Arbus eligió a personas marginales para sus fotografías: gemelos, enfermos mentales, gigantes, familias disfuncionales, fenómenos de circo, etc. Los personajes miraban directamente a la cámara, lo que hace que el flash revele sus defectos. Su intención era producir en el espectador "temor y vergüenza". Pionera del flash de relleno (flash de día) La fotografía de Diane representa lo normal como monstruoso: cuando fotografía el dolor, lo encuentra en personas normales. Provoca que la gente presuntamente normal aparezca como anormal. Rompe la composición, sitúa al personaje en el centro. Su mirada siempre es directa, con tensión y fuerza. Para ella no existe el momento decisivo, trabaja en continuo espacio temporal y obliga a los retratados a que sean conscientes de que están siendo retratados. Busca una mirada nueva, pasando del tedio a la fascinación. Se rebela contra el Gobierno, lo público, lo normal...

FUR Retrato de una obsesión es el título de la película producida en 2006 y basada más en una semblanza que en una biografía de la artista. Dirigida por Steven Shainberg (Secretary), protagonizada por Nicole Kidman y Robert Downey Jr. retratos de una obsesion es brillante, el reflejo de la castrante sociedad estadounidense de los años 50, con el magistral contraste del encuentro de dos mundos viviendo en un mismo espacio, el choque de la "normalidad" forzada contra los secretos de la oscuridad hacen de la pelicula un poema a la libertad. Lisette Model (November 10, 1901 in Wien as Elise Amelie Felicie Stern - March 30, 1983 in New York City) was an Austrian-born American photographer.
Lisette Model was born Elise Felic Amelie Stern in Vienna, Austria. Her father was an Italian/Austrian doctor of Jewish descent attached to the Austrian Imperial Army and, later, to the International Red Cross; her mother was French and Roman Catholic, and Model was baptised into her mother's faith. Two years after her birth, her parents changed their family name to Seybert. According to interview testimony from her older brother, she was sexually molested by her father, though the full extent of his abuse remains unclear.
She was primarily educated by a series of private tutors, achieving fluency in three languages. At age 19, she began studying music with composer Arnold Schönberg, and was familiar to members of his circle. "If ever in my life I had one teacher and one great influence, it was Schönberg," she said.
Model left Vienna for Paris after her father's death in 1924 to study voice with Polish soprano Marya Freund. It was during this period that she met her future husband, the French-Jewish painter Evsa Model. In 1933 she gave up music and recommitted herself to studying visual art, at first taking up painting as a student of Andre Lhote (whose other students included Henri Cartier-Bresson and George Hoyningen-Huene).
She also took up photography, taking basic instruction in darkroom techniques from her younger sister Olga Seybert (herself a life-long professional photographer), though Parisian portrait photographer Rogi Andre was the person Model credited with providing her primary instruction in camera techniques.
Visiting her mother in Nice in 1934 (she and Olga had emigrated from Vienna several years prior), Model took her camera out on the Promenade des Anglais and made a series of portraits which are among her most widely reproduced and exhibited images. These close-cropped, often clandestine portraits of the local privileged class already bore what would become her signature style: close-up, unsentimental and unretouched expositions of vanity, insecurity and loneliness.
She married Evsa Model in 1937 and the following year they emigrated to join her husband's sister in Manhattan. There she supported herself as a photographer, having work published regularly in Harper's Bazaar by editors Carmel Snow and Alexey Brodovitch. Model eventually became a member of the New York 'Photo League,' which would host her first dedicated showing.
In 1951, Model was invited to teach at the New School for Social Research in New York City, where her longtime friend Berenice Abbott was also teaching photography. Model's best known pupil was Diane Arbus, who studied under her in 1957, and Arbus owed much of her early technique to Model's example. Model continued to teach until her death in 1983.
Public collections of her work are held at the following institutions:
• Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City
• Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles
• The Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego
