Mayor Pappas: (Thank you, Reverend.) I was warned not to come here. I was warned. They warned me, "Don't stand behind that coffin." But why should I heed such a warning when a heartbeat is silent and a child lies dead? "Don't stand behind" this coffin. That boy was as pure and as innocent as the driven snow. But I must stand here, because I have not given you what you should have. Until we can walk abroad and recreate ourselves, until we can stroll along the streets like boulevards, congregate in parks free from fear, our families mingling, our children laughing, our hearts joined -- until that day we have no city. You can label me a failure until that day.
The first and perhaps only great mayor was Greek. He was Pericles of Athens, and he lived some 2500 years ago, and he said, "All things good of this earth flow into the City because of the City's greatness." Well, we were great once. Can we not be great again? Now, I put that question to James Bone, and there's only silence. Yet, could not something pass from this sweet youth to me? Could he not empower me to find in myself the strength to have the knowledge to summon up the courage to accomplish this seemingly insurmountable task of making a city livable? Just livable.
There was a palace that was a city. It was a palace! It was a palace and it can be a palace again! A palace in which there is no king or queen or dukes or earls or princes, but subjects all -- subjects beholden to each other, to make a better place to live. Is that too much to ask? Are we asking too much for this? Is it beyond our reach?! Because if it is, then we are nothing but sheep being herded to the final slaughterhouse! I will not go down that way!! I choose to fight back!!! I choose to rise, not fall! I choose to live, not die!! And I know, I know that what's within me is also within you!
That's why I ask you now to join me. Join me, rise up with me; rise up on the wings of this slain angel. We'll rebuild on the soul of this little warrior. City Hall is a 1996 film directed by Harold Becker. Al Pacino and John Cusack star as the idealistic Mayor of New York John Pappas, and Deputy Mayor, Kevin Calhoun respectively.
The plot follows the aftermath of the death of a boy caught in the crossfire a drug dealer/detective shootout. Calhoun's investigations, as well as those by Marybeth Cogan (Bridget Fonda), eventually uncover a scandal. |

**************STORY IN DESCRIPTION BOX***********
The boys and Haley sit there watching the video, laughing their butts off at the stuff the girls were doing, when Bridget walked in 10 minutes later in a tank top and sweatpants.
Bridget: so what are we doing?
Kevin: watching "Act A fool"
Bridget: *takes a deep gasp*
Haley: [she finishes for Kevin]...2007! Breath!
Bridget: [light laugh] oh. Scoot over, I love this part.
This part of the movie the girls are dressed as ninjas running around the dorm building scarring the crap out of the other girls. They're jumping from dark places, creeping up on people, jumping from high places all that good ninja stuff.
While they're enjoying the movie Alexandria enters the room to get some snacks and soda. She makes sure to be silent because she doesn't want to ruin the moment, then she heads back into her room.
Nick: so how's it going in there?
Alexandria: I think your brothers may have slight crushes on my mates, and Haley and Bridget seem return their feelings. [she says smiling]
Nick: [smiling] you knew this would happen didn't you? That's why you wanted them to come.
Alexandria: what can I say? I'm a romantic, it was so obvious they'd hit it off. I can always tell when two people should be together. [she smiles and turns back to the computer]
Nick: [smiles too and looks at her for a couple of seconds before looking away back to the computer screen] control yourself [he muttered]
Alexandria: what was that?
Nick: uh...nothing...hey make sure you type that in bold.
Meanwhile in the living room...
Kevin: dude, Joe, get some more popcorn, you finished the entire bowl
Joe: ugh! Fine! [he gets up to fill a new bowl]
About a minute later...
Bridget: okay, he's been there for far too long. He's probably eaten all the popcorn again. Ugh, be right back. [she gets up to help Joe out in the kitchen]
Kevin and Haley continue watching the movie but at one part it scrambles.
Haley: hold on. Sometimes the player just needs a slight...[she hit's the DVD player]...shove
The picture on the TV screen is still scrambled. Kevin goes to aid Haley in fixing it.
Bridget and Joe return from the kitchen to find the two trying to fix the player. They just sit down on the sofa, eating the popcorn, yelling out some random advice like "take out the DVD and wipe it"
Finally it starts to play normally again and they all settle back down to finish the movie. Joe still with Bridget on the sofa and Haley parked near the DVD player with Kevin on the floor.
About 10 minutes after it's started playing again...
Joe: [whispers to Bridget] hey, are you as bored as I am now?
Bridget: [whispers back] thank god I thought I was the only one. Lets go do something fun.
Joe: [whispers to Bridget] hey there's a party at our dorm building, Terrence hall. That could be fun.
Bridget: [whispers back] psh yeah! Count me in. I'm gonna go change into something more party worthy be back in 5.
Bridget leaves the room for hers. She runs to her closets, throwing whatever clothes were in there around until she found the perfect outfit, a bright yellow mini dress paired with some yellow flats and simple studs in her ears. She grabbed a matching purse and threw in her cell phone, wallet, all the essential then she walked out quietly beckoning Joe to follow her as she headed for the front door. They slipped out giggling and running hand in hand across the commons (AN: that's like the center of the school grounds were students just hand out when they're outside) toward Terrence Hall.
5 minutes later...
Kevin and Haley notice that they're the only ones laughing and realize that Joe and Bridget had left.
Haley: [angry] what the hell?
She picks up her cell phone and called Bridget's
Bridget picks up
Bridget: [out of breath] hullo?
Haley: [yelling] where are you? You don't just up and vanish in the middle of a movie without telling someone!
Bridget: please you were so into the movie and also Kevin, I might add, that you didn't even realize we were gone till just now.
Haley smiles and Kevin gives her a look like what happened?
She just shakes her head and mouths 'nothing' then turns back to her conversation
Haley: were are you guys?!!
Bridget: headed down to Terrence hall for a par-tay!
Haley heard a whoop from a male voice in the background, obviously Joe. And loud party music in the background.
Bridget: well were here, gotta run, see you later!
Haley: NO! don't you dare hang up on me...
But all she heard was a loud tone on the other end
Kevin: well?!
Haley: they're at a party at your dorm
Kevin: looks like were headed for a party...

Alexandria: Common Hales, it's one boy. Are you going to let him control you forever? It's been three months and you still cant be around him. You need to do this!
Haley: you don't understand...it's never happened to you before. I don't know why but there's something about him. Every time we break up, we somehow end up back together. No this is for the best. If spending my life avoiding him is what it takes then it's a price I'm willing to pay.
Bridget: rigghhht. Or. And I'm just throwing this out there. You could walk up to him in a dignity at all times sort of way and ignore his snogging requests with a cold shoulder.
Haley: no no no, I've tried. You both know I have. You've been there for the midnight breakdowns. But every time I see him, my mouth somehow finds it's way to his and we end up back together. Please just get me in our room without him seeing.
Bridget and Alexandria: *heavy sigh* fiiinne
Haley crouches low while Bridget and Alexandria shuffle sideways down the hallway to their dorm room pulling their luggage with them. They were smiling, waving, and calling out hellos as if it were perfectly normal. They finally get to their room
Bridget: your lucky I love you or I'd be suing you for possibly throwing my back out.
Alexandria: Really! What do you have in your suitcases? Bricks? They weigh a ton.
Bridget: merd`e. my back hurts like billio (AN: billio is the british way of saying like very achy. I dunno why they say that. don?t look at me, I?m just the writer)
Haley: [relieved to be safely in their dorm] thanks you guys. I owe you one.
Alexandria and Bridget: yeah yea yeah [they wave her off]
The girls applied during the summer for their room assignments so they could have a dorm room to share together in Pentridge hall. A hall known for it's nice rooms and proximity to the actual school building. And the dorm really were pretty nice, with a sitting room area, kitchen with all the necessary supplies like a fridge and stove, and a widescreen T.V with cable. There were four doors leading off to three bedrooms and a bathroom. The rooms themselves were big for what usual dorm rooms look like and in them were twin sized beds with bean bags in the corners of the room and a sofa, a computer area, a mini fridge and a closet. Once they got to their dorm room, they dropped off their stuff, there was no time to unpack. Classes started in two hours and they needed to make sure they looked good on their first day. Not to mention they had to head down to the guidance office and get their schedules. Bridget and Haley were first to finish getting ready so they left, telling Alexandria to meet them by the guidance office.
Meanwhile...
The Jonas brothers sleepily turned up at the Academy in a taxi and trudged up to the main office with their luggage.
